It’s all about Scotland in the Deli this January as we join forces with Glebe House School to put on a fabulous Burns Night Party on 27 January.

Chef Gemma and her team have put together a fantastic Burns Night menu with a host of treats, including Scottish smoked salmon, Haggis, Scotch Broth, neeps and tatties and a Cranachan dessert.

Once you have finished eating, you will have the chance to don your dancing shoes, follow a Scottish piper across to the Village Hall and join in the After Party – an evening of Ceilidh dancing.

What an incredible year it has been. Here at the Deli, we don’t seem to have stopped to draw breath as we have raced from one challenge to another. There are of course, some fantastic highlights – winning the EDP Food and Drink Award for Best Independent Retailer, was one of them, but really, where do you start?

The Thornham Deli online shop is up and running to enable all our customers to buy Deli products from wherever they are in the world. As the range of stock that we sell has got wider and wider, so we thought it was only right to open a virtual shop for people who cannot always get to our beautiful corner of the north Norfolk coast.

Thornham Deli head chef Gemma Arnold and local fisherman and smokery-owner Simon Letzer are two of the stars of the recently published book, Norfolk Table: one county, 20 chefs. In the book, which examines the relationship between some of the county’s culinary wizards and the producers who supply the ingredients, we get an insight into Simon’s working day as well as Gemma’s ability to transform something from the ocean into a magnificent, unctuous feast.

The team at Thornham Deli were caught somewhere between stunned delight and total ecstasy when the winner of the Independent Food and Drink Retailer was announced at the EDP Norfolk Food and Drink Awards.

“We are absolutely chuffed to bits,” was co-owner Janie Thompson’s reaction on picking up the prestigious award. Janie paid tribute to the team who work so hard to make the Deli a vibrant and high quality place for all its customers.

The Big Cheese at Thornham Deli
At this time of year we love picnics, BBQs and al fresco dining. One of the ingredients that is always sure to make an appearance at some point of the meal is a lovely cheese. Whether it is in a sandwich, as part of a board with charcuterie and pickles, with biscuits and grapes or just as a lovely bite in its own right, cheese quite often emerges as the star of the show.

It’s been a busy time across the road from Thornham Deli as the team behind No33 and Thornham Deli have been racing to get the two boutique self catering and B&B cottages ready for the first guests. From the beautiful, well-equipped kitchen to the bespoke headboards, this is a triumph of design and versatility. “This has been a real labour of love,” said Janie. “It is probably the project with the most design elements in it."

There is no doubt, not all vegetables are created equal. To us, asparagus is the king of the vegetables. There is no other vegetable that sums up the importance of seasonality better than asparagus. These days you can buy asparagus all year round in the supermarkets – shipped in from South America, from the warmer parts of Europe – if you wanted to, you could eat it all year round.

With St George's Day falling on 23rd April, what better way to celebrate great British cuisine than a supper devoted to all that is good about British produce.

On 22 April, Thornham Deli is hosting a British Cuisine evening, where chef Gemma Arnold and her team will be putting on a smorgasbord of goodies for guests to enjoy.

Thornham Deli's super-chef Gemma is all set to become a Norfolk culinary legend as she will feature in the latest 'foodie' book – Norfolk Table: One County, Twenty Chefs, which will be published in September 2016.

While there will be no spoilers here revealing what Gemma cooked as her 'signature dish,' we are able to reveal one or two snippets from the interview that may surprise you about the ebullient chef.

For people of a certain generation, it will seem like a step back in time, for another generation, this is the new 'grey-cool'. Wherever you sit on the age-spectrum, you cannot fail to have noticed that the Stones are back in town. Mick and his mates have just launched a new show at the Saatchi Gallery in London and are currently mid-way through a tour of Latin and South America.

And, if there was ever any doubt that Thornham Deli is ahead of the curve when it comes to cool and contemporary, then the fact that we stock lingerie and loungewear from London fashion label Asceno proves a point.

Easter is on its way and with it comes one of the busiest and most enjoyable times for us at the Deli. Giving it some mussel

Giving it some Mussel
Mussels: tasty, more-ish and good for you

Mar
2016

This month in Thornham Deli, we are all about mussels – the shellfish, not the bicep variety!

We source all our fresh produce as locally as we can, particularly fish and shellfish, which is why all the mussels on our menu are sourced just three miles down the road from Brancaster.

Once referred to as the 'poor man's shellfish', because they were cheap and plentiful, mussels – which are a type of clam – can be a meal for royalty let alone a poor man! They are versatile in the kitchen, eaten as a dish on their own or in salads, soups, or as a topping for pasta. And we are particularly spoilt in North Norfolk as this area of the coast is teeming with healthy, juicy mussels. This means they are still relatively cheap, plentiful and sustainable.

It’s the start of a new year and as usual we are looking forward to another busy 12 months. But, just as you were expecting a monologue of all that will be happening in the Deli in the coming weeks and months, we have decided to take a few minutes out to talk about something that is very dear to our hearts here in Thornham Deli – health and fitness.

We also know just how difficult it can be sometimes to get out and about – work, family commitments, the weather – they all conspire to stop us getting the exercise we should. So here are some top tips for ways to get fit and active despite the obstructions that so often cross our paths.

The Pie’s the limit

As Thornham Deli gears up for its Pie Evening on Friday 20 November, we cast an eye over the cultural and culinary history behind the humble pie.

Certainly pies are nothing new. As far back as 2500BC, Egyptians were tucking into their own version of a sweet pie, which comprised ground oats or wheat wrapped around a honey filling. In other parts of the Middle East the first chicken pies were being enjoyed by the Sumerians and in Greece, which was always ahead of its time, a flour and water pie was making its way onto the menus of early Greek tavernas.

It was market day.

Here at Thornham Deli we rely upon our producers and growers. We work hard to build up good relationships with the men and women who provide our food, drink and other produce, so that we know we are getting the best quality at a fair price for everyone.

Our shelves and food counters are full of goods from around Norfolk and our menu is jammed with locally sourced meats, fish, vegetables, fruit and other food stuffs. Chef Gemma works hard to showcase what is seasonal, so the menu changes regularly.

Here, we pay tribute to three of our producers.

We might be a business but here at Thornham Deli, and in our sister enterprises at No 33 Hunstanton and No 33 Thornham, we truly believe that it is easier to work with people than in competition with them. Whether it is the Hoffhaus Design team behind our lovely new website or the Redgate bakery at Heacham that supplies the daily bread, we like to build a long-lasting relationship that reflects loyalty on both sides.

I am writing this blog post from two standpoints really: on the one hand I am a member of the public looking for a great shopping experience; on the other hand, I am an occasional stall holder at a Farmers Market. This makes the news about Thornham Deli's new venture exciting on two fronts...

...

Coffee and cake. It's a match made in heaven

Coffee and cake. It's a match made in heaven and the perfect mid-morning treat or mid-afternoon essential.

At the coffee bar you will find Illy coffee, prepared by our trained baristas, so that it is served at the right temperature, the correct strength and with the most perfect intensity of flavour.

And on the counter, home made cakes that just beg to be devoured. Yes they are naughty, but just sometimes, everyone deserves a scrummy treat.

Visitors who base themselves at either of our boutique bed and breakfast accommodation – No. 33 Hunstanton or No. 33 Thornham – have a wealth of exploring to do.

Whether it is cycling around the winding and largely quiet Norfolk lanes and roads; walking the beautiful Norfolk coastal path or exploring the small shops, galleries and cafes that dot this landscape, there is something soul-saving about spending time here.

Here are three things that the owners of Thornham Deli, Janie Thompson and Jeanne Whittome, suggest you should do on your days out and about in north Norfolk.

Donna Raven is just such a person. As she looks out of her office above the Thornham Deli, there is nothing but infectious enthusiasm in her voice as she says:

“This is such a fun place to work; it is buzzy, it is a lovely setting, the Deli itself is a fantastic space, it’s just the whole ambience.”

Here at Thornham Deli and our partner businesses No.33 Hunstanton and No.33 Thornham, we pride ourselves on making the right choice when it comes to business relationships.
