Tom turns his hand to everything
“I cover just about everything in the Deli, I can make coffee, I can work in the shop, I can do anything from housekeeping to front of house,” says apprentice Tom. “Janie offered me the chance to do an apprenticeship in hospitality here and I just love every aspect of the job. The slogan ‘more than a deli’ is so true because it has the outside catering, the interior design, the cottages, the shop. There is so much to the business and it is growing all the time.”
It has been a year since Tom arrived at the Deli and he absolutely thrives on the buzzing atmosphere. As this interview took place, Tom was also sourcing high chairs for a family with three toddlers and directing another group to an empty table.
As part of his apprenticeship, and as part of the Deli policy to allow staff to develop their skills across a range of areas, Tom has been involved in the entire business. It is interior design that has really piqued his interest and is something that he would like to develop further. He is currently honing his interior design skills and developing an eye for detail by getting involved in dressing the shelves in the shop.
That interest in design means that Tom’s favourite item in the store is the iconic Gluggle Jug. “I just love the Gluggle Jugs, they are quirky, they are a true design piece and I haven’t really seen them anywhere else,” he says.
